Gear Drive Technology Formulas and Symbols

Minimize

At this stage of your educational career, you’ll be familiar with the basic concepts and principles relating to gear technology. Our intention here is to help you associate the range of formulas and symbols with some of the geared motors from SEW Eurodrive that you may decide to use in your design.

Symbols and Descriptions

M = peak or motor total torque (Nm)
ML = stall torque (Nm)
Ma = acceleration torque (Nm)
Mfr = braking torque (Nm)
P = motor total power (kW)
PL = power at normal operating speed (kW)
Pa = acceleration power (kW)
n = rotating speed (min-1)
Δn = rotation difference (min-1)
v = linear speed (m/min)
Δv = speed difference (m/min)
J = inertia (kgm2)
M = mass (kg)

F = force (N)
W = energy (J)
ta = acceleration time (s)
tfr = braking time (s)
s = space (m)
